Exclusive interview with Ylenia Baglietto: "I've always had a special connection with all art".

She has only been in the Italian episodes of the soap opera Una Vita for a few weeks, but Maite Zaldúa, a painting teacher played by the talented Basque actress Ylenia Baglietto, is thrilling the audience. A complex character, who will disrupt Acacias' life, especially when she embarks on a relationship with the young Camino Pasamar (Aria Bedmar). A homosexual and forbidden relationship, especially in 1913, which will influence much of the dynamics of the soap opera: as Ylenia Baglietto explained in this interview.

With the precious collaboration of Roberto Mallò for Massmedia Comunicazione

Hi Ylenia, for a few weeks now we have been watching Maite Zaldúa, the character you play in Una Vita, also in Italy. I imagine this is a great emotion for you.

Absolutely, yes. One of the first curiosities I had was to hear Maite dubbed in Italian. Also, I can say that I'm looking forward to receiving the affection of the fans who live in Italy. I'm sure you will be moved by her love story with Camino Pasamar, played by the very talented Aria Bedmar. If Maitino has been so strong and, above all, appreciated in the world, it is because she and I have been able to establish a relationship of deep complicity. That made our characters really love each other. Among other things, I think Maite has made me take steps forward in my career. Acacias 38 has made the Spanish public, as well as the international public, get to know me more quickly. I always read with pleasure the appreciations about Maite, which really come from different parts of the world.

You have mentioned this before. I think most of the audience, also from spoilers, knows that Maite will live a deep love story with Camino. So the telenovela will again deal with LGBT+ issues. Do you think we need to talk about this story?

It's fundamental. The audience needs to see these storylines. Maite and Camino show the audience that there are two women who love each other and that there is nothing wrong with that feeling. It is always a mistake when you are afraid to show that there are different ways of loving in the world. Maitino's love is beautiful and pure, but it will face several obstacles before it has a happy ending.

When you started filming, did you expect all this success?

I would be lying if I said I expected such a big success. I saw the strength of Camino and Maite when the Iberian public started to know them. I have always tried to do my best, from scene to scene, and today I understand why Maite and Camino are so loved. They helped women who feel in the same condition as them; it gives them a way to accept themselves, to understand that they are not alone. It gives a message to people, men and women alike, who don't feel free to love who they want.

Besides Maite, would you have liked to play any other character, if you had had the opportunity?

I like all the characters in Acacias 38. Each of them has an interesting plot. Obviously, I am grateful to have played Maite Zaldúa; I think I was very lucky to have her. I can't answer this question because, basically, I would have liked to play any character in Acacias 38. There is a great team behind it: from the scriptwriters to the technicians.

In May 2021, the telenovela will say goodbye, at least in Spain, to the public. What was your reaction when you heard that it was going to close its doors?

It was news that surprised me a lot. It was hard news for everyone; no one expected it. However, those who do my job know: every series has a beginning and an end. However, Acacias 38 will end with a lot of people who still love it. The grand finale will be exciting and special.

When did you decide to act?

I have always had a special connection with everything related to art. From the age of 4 to 17 I did artistic gymnastics. Throughout my youth I have been connected to music, to my body, to creativity. The turning point came when I had to give up artistic gymnastics because I had outgrown it. However, I wanted to create art and continue performing in front of an audience. The initial sprint was given to me by the series Paso adelante, which later also came to Italy. I discovered the existence of drama schools, where children were taught acting and dancing. I told my parents that I wanted to do it and I enrolled at the Academy of Dramatic Art.

What are you doing at the moment?

I can't say much at the moment, due to a number of reasons, but I have some theatre projects, which I hope to do soon.

What do you do in your spare time?

I never stop. I do everything from sport to going to the cinema, to the theatre, to good restaurants. I love reading, listening to music, travelling, dancing and meditating. In general, I fill my free time with things that make me feel great.

I know you are happily engaged.

Yes, I am engaged to Lander Otaola, who is also an actor. I met him when we were both studying theatre. We studied at the same school. Since then we have had the desire to build something together. I have always felt very lucky in love. I have by my side the person I have always dreamed of and always wanted. I was lucky to find such a beautiful, free and easy love as the one I have with my partner

I would like to close this talk with one last question: Do you have any particular dream in your drawer?

Of course I do. I definitely want to specialise more and more in my profession; to play complex and different characters to put myself on the line. I would like to win a Goya award, the biggest film award in Spain. I dream big, that's why I'd like to work with Woody Allen one day.
