Maids and ladies in early twentieth-century Spain

IÑIGO GÓMEZ | 08.08.2021

FOR SEVEN SEASONS AND ALMOST 1,500 EPISODES, 'ACACIAS 38' HAS TOLD THE FICTIONAL STORY OF A GROUP OF MAIDS AND THE BOURGEOIS FAMILIES THEY WORKED FOR. "I'VE ALWAYS LIKED THIS SERIES, WHILE GARBIÑE FINDS IT BORING," CONFESSES JULIO HURTADO.

One of the most successful Spanish series in the last 6 years has been Acacias 38, which in almost 1,500 daily chapters told the fictional story of a group of maids and the bourgeois families they work for between 1899 and 1920 in Spain. But, before we talk about the series it is good to make a small historical reminder to know, what happened in the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century in the State? or What happened in Spain between these dates?

As the history books indicate, during the 19th century Spain was profoundly transformed, as agriculture was modernized and a modern industry was born. In addition, the old absolute monarchy was replaced by a parliamentary and constitutional one. The Inquisition and manorial rights also disappeared, and the old feudal society brought about the arrival of a class society, made up of bourgeois and workers - here we can see the two parts that make up the series of Acacias 38, on the one hand the maids and on the other the bourgeois.

This whole process of renovation was called the Industrial Revolution and was similar to the one that existed in Western Europe, although in Spain industrialization did not achieve a great development. On the other hand, the parliamentary regime did not achieve great stability due to the practice of caciquismo and the bourgeoisie was not as decisive in Spanish life as in Europe. Even so, there were confrontations between absolutists and bourgeoisie that provoked absolutist counterrevolutions, civil wars, pronunciamientos and fights among the liberals themselves that led to the fall of the monarchy and the origin of the First Republic in Spain, to conclude the century with the Bourbon Restoration in the son of Isabel II, Alfonso XII. The reputation of the parliamentary system was decreasing and ended in 1917 -period in which the series of Acacias 38 more or less ended- in a great crisis under the reign of Alfonso XIII that meant the end of the monarchy.

Among the wars or important events of the late nineteenth century in which Spain participated are the Cuban War of Independence against Spain in 1895 and the Spanish-American War or the Treaty of Paris where Cuba became independent and Puerto Rico and the Philippines became part of the United States in 1898 -just one year before the beginning of the historical setting of the series-.

On the other hand, among the important events that happened at the beginning of the century, we will highlight some of them, knowing that we will not mention many that are just as important. For example, in 1910 the CNT was founded, as a result of the union of different Anarchist unions throughout the state that already had a tradition of several decades. Unlike the communists, the CNT union repudiated the idea of the existence of states. And, in 1919 the Communist party was created in Spain. In 1914 Spain declared itself neutral in the First World War, in 1917 after the Russian Revolution, in Spain there were numerous revolutionary disorders, especially during the month of August in Barcelona, promoted by the Regionalist League, which were repressed by the police and the army.

7 SEASONS AND 1.483 EPISODES

Acacías 38 is a series that has marked an era in many Spanish homes and in those who, at the same time, watched in amazement as last May 4 was broadcast the last chapter of a series that had been accompanying them every afternoon since 2015.

Before its premiere its executive producers, Josep Císter, Susana López Rubio, Miquel Peidró and Aurora Guerra, did not hide that their references were in British titles such as 'Arriba y abajo' or 'Downton Abbey' and in the literature of Benito Pérez Galdós, especially 'Fortunata y Jacinta'.

The executive producer Humberto Miró assured recently in an interview that "the stories are the ones that were thought, nothing is closed falsely", which makes it clear that it has not been a hasty closure or forced by anything, although he recognizes that "in Acacias 38 life goes on and there were many things to tell and the series could have had a longer run".

In Acacias 38 there have been 1,300 hours of shooting, 9,450 hours of recording, more than 63,000 pages of script and a total of 437 actors, including Ylenia Baglietto in her role as Maite Záldua, protagonist of the first issue of IN with her partner, the actor Lander Otaola.

THE PANDEMIC CHANGED THE RHYTHM

As expected, the pandemic slowed down the filming of the series and this affected the normal rhythm of broadcasting from Monday to Friday with a complete chapter. Fortunately, and as they had recorded several chapters a week in advance, the series was broadcasting half a chapter a day and thus two and a half chapters a week. From June 15, 2020, the series resumed broadcasting full chapters -until its end- after the return of the actors to the shooting when it was possible after the confinement. "We had a good cushion of episodes when the confinement. I'll never forget the excitement we felt when we were able to return to filming between May and June," notes the executive producer.
